With Thanksgiving behind us and Halloween just around the corner, fall is certainly here to stay. We’ve had a gorgeous September and October here on the West Coast, allowing us some beautiful autumn day sails and overnight trips in our local area. On the food scene, we had a lovely day at the Ocean to Table Festival in Cowichan Bay on September 21st, with attendees sampling the Smoked Black Cod and Cheddar Chowder from our book, Sea Salt: Recipes from the West Coast Galley. The following day, we joined throngs of other local food devotees for a spectacular afternoon at the 20th Annual Feast of Fields. The harvest festival raises funds for Farm Folk City Folk, which supports local, sustainable food systems through a variety of initiatives. We were delighted to have our book included in the silent auction, as well as in the gift bags given to participants and sponsors. For four hours, we wandered through a field at idyllic Metchosin Farm, sampling food and drink from some of BC’s finest chefs, artisans, farmers, fishermen, wineries, breweries and cideries. Some of our favourite bites: Ocean Wise sustainable seafood cone from The Fairmont Empress; fried albacore tuna sushi from AURA; Vancouver Island venison and chanterelle mushroom ravioli from Cowichan Pasta; farmer’s s’mores from Amuse on the Vineyard; and Italian plum French macarons from one of our beloved local restos, Riso Foods. Next on the horizon? We’re thrilled to be attending Edible Canada’s November market dinner hosted by acclaimed Vancouver chef and restaurateur, Vikram Vij.
